More about Punta Baja
Punta Baja is a point break with both left and right-hand walls running along a rocky reef headland. The break works best during winter swell with west to northwest groundswells, particularly when paired with offshore east winds. The point can produce extended rides by wrapping waves into the bay during favorable conditions, but the submerged rocks and complex reef near the break require experienced navigation and make it unsuitable for beginners.
Winter months from October through March see the most consistent surf, with January typically offering the best conditions, though even then clean rideable waves only occur about one-third of the time before offshore winds diminish the swell. The tidal range is significant at around 3.2 meters.
The spot sits south of Ensenada near the El Rosario area, marked by signs off the main highway with stairs providing access to the beach. Infrastructure is minimal—essentially only surf camps operate here with no hotel development—making it a remote destination that remains sparsely visited despite reliable winter swells. Reaching it requires commitment and a vehicle suited to rough coastal road conditions.
