More about Pudding Creek Beach
Pudding Creek is a finicky beach break in a rocky cove that only becomes surfable during small, clean swell windows. The sandy bottom produces unpredictable banks that shift regularly, leaving the spot unreliable even when conditions align. Northwest swell is the primary driver. The real challenge here is the current: paddling back out against tidal flow requires strength and attention, and rip currents are strong enough to concern experienced surfers. Rocks dot the break and line the cove walls. Water temperature hovers around 13–14°C most of the year, climbing only to the mid-50s Fahrenheit in late summer—thick 5/4mm wetsuits are the norm, and the region carries a notably high shark presence.
Local surfers treat this as a spot to check on marginal days rather than a reliable go-to, and it's most appealing to experienced wave-readers willing to spend time reading a temperamental break. The spot has enough history among local and traveling Northern California surfers to appear in regional guides, and it shares the Fort Bragg lineup with better-known alternatives. Occasional solid swells bring out dedicated paddlers, but consistency is not the draw here.
The beach sits at the mouth of Pudding Creek immediately off Highway 1, with a small free parking area directly accessible from the road. The historic Pudding Creek Trestle—a restored railroad bridge now part of the Ten Mile Trail system—frames the entrance to the water. Beach access is straightforward and free. Restrooms are available in the lot, and the area is part of the broader MacKerricher State Park system, where dogs on-leash are permitted.
