More about Praia Ribeira d' Ilhas

Ribeira d'Ilhas is a long righthand point break with exceptionally winding, mellow faces that can peel for over 200 meters, breaking over a combination of reef and cobblestones into deeper water. The wave begins breaking at knee height and holds size up to double overhead or more, making it accessible to surfers of varying ability levels despite the heavy swell it can receive. It is one of the most consistent breaks in Europe and works reliably year-round at nearly all tides, though it performs best from mid to high tide rather than at low tide.

The spot is historically significant in Portuguese surfing, hosting the country's first national and international surfing championships in 1977. It has remained a venue for major competitions ever since and now hosts the EDP Ericeira Pro, a WSL Challenger Series event that attracts elite competitors. The break is synonymous with several generations of Portuguese surfers and remains central to the region's competitive scene.

Located 3 kilometers north of Ericeira in a dramatic cliff-backed sandy bay and part of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, the spot receives strong crowds particularly on good swell days. Hazards include powerful rip currents and rocky patches, with entry and exit requiring care over slippery reef, and sea urchins are present in the water. The break handles westerly and northwesterly swell best under offshore easterly winds.
