More about Praia Internacional
Praia Internacional is a beach break with left and right-hand waves that responds well to northwesterly swell, particularly when combined with southeast or easterly winds. Mid-tide generally offers the best shape. The break sits more exposed than nearby alternatives in the area and can produce punchier conditions, picking up swell readily. The sand bottom and shifting sandbars create a dynamic wave canvas, though this instability and the Douro River's outflow influence require careful reading of conditions. Strong rip currents are a consistent feature, especially during outgoing tides or after heavy rain.
Praia Internacional has become the primary venue for national-level Portuguese surfing competition, hosting the Sumol Porto Pro as part of the MOCHE League, which determines the country's male and female champions. The beach also holds the Rip Curl GromSearch and Campeonato Nacional de Surf Esperanças (national junior championship). Historically, the Sumol Pro stage has served as a pivotal third-round event that reshapes the competitive season; between 2008 and 2015, only one edition was won by a non-champion. The beach maintains multiple surf schools and attracts beginner to intermediate surfers alongside serious competitors.
Located at the mouth of the Douro River in Porto's Foz district near Parque da Cidade, the beach is split between Porto and Matosinhos municipalities. The area offers both free and paid parking, with weekend and summer availability limited; wheelchair-accessible spaces are available. The urban location makes it easily accessible despite the beach's exposure to Atlantic swell and river dynamics.
