More about Praia do Zavial
Zavial's main feature is a fast right-hand point break that wraps around the bay, creating hollow, barreling sections when southwestern and western swells meet northwest winds. The wave has a steep, sucky initial section that often barrels with occasional backdoor entries, then shoots tight barrels back into the channel. It works best on a dropping to low tide, though mid-tide produces rideable shapes in smaller swells. The break is extremely heavy and demands respect—surfers regularly snap boards even on 1–2 foot days. Hazards include shallow rocks, a steep rocky bottom, and powerful rip currents. Winter swells from North Atlantic storms provide the most consistent waves between November and March, when long-period groundswell wraps the southwestern coast.
Zavial has become one of the Algarve's most recognized and revered surf destinations, particularly among expert surfers seeking challenging, high-consequence waves. The spot has built a reputation in the regional surf community for its raw power and unforgiving character, though documentation of specific major competitions or historical milestones at the break is sparse.
Praia do Zavial lies in Vila do Bispo municipality, roughly 15 minutes south of Sagres and 10 minutes from Vila do Bispo town. From the N268 highway between Vila do Bispo and Sagres, turn south at Raposeira; a tarmac road descends about 2 kilometers to a small free car park. The lot fills quickly during peak hours, so early arrival is essential. A wooden walkway from the parking area leads directly to the beach.
