More about Praia de Carcavelos

Praia de Carcavelos is a 1.25km sandy beach break with consistent multiple peaks. The left-hand waves are more defined and frequent than the rights, capable of producing hollow barrels under favorable conditions. The spot picks up west and southwest groundswell best and works at all tidal stages, though mid-tide is most productive. Northeast offshore winds create the cleanest shape; in summer the waves are smaller and manageable for beginners, while autumn through spring bring larger, more powerful swells suited to intermediate and experienced surfers. Waves range from two feet on flat days to over ten feet in larger swells.

Portuguese surfing began at Carcavelos in 1956 when pioneer Pedro Martins de Lima paddled out on a 16-kilogram wooden board. Decades later, the beach gained international recognition as host of the Allianz Billabong Pro Cascais, an annual October competition on the World Qualifying Series that attracts the world's top-ranked male and female surfers. Several notable Portuguese professionals, including Tiago Pires and Frederico Morais, launched competitive careers through sessions at this beach.

The beach lies 20 kilometers west of Lisbon's center and is reached via a 26-minute train ride from central Lisbon, followed by a short walk to the sand. Free and paid parking options are abundant compared to nearby breaks. The beach offers a full range of facilities including a surf school, restaurants, bars, showers, toilets, and sports infrastructure. Crowds are heavy during summer months and year-round due to proximity to Lisbon; spring and early autumn provide the best combination of consistent swell and manageable crowds for surfing progression.
