More about Praia da Salema

Salema is a shallow sandbar break with both left and right-hand peaks across a wide sandy beach, best approached with prior local knowledge of the bar's shifting patterns. Winter is the primary season; pure south swells trigger the most reliable waves, though hard offshore wraps of northwesterly wind in winter can produce rideable conditions on minimal swell. The break attracts beginner surfers and longboarders seeking a mellow, uncrowded wave that peels across white sand; it rarely draws experienced surfers seeking challenge.

Access is centered on the village square, which doubles as the main car park ringed by cafés and leads directly to the beach. Parking can fill during summer, but overflow areas are clearly marked nearby. A local bus service connects Salema to Lagos and Sagres, though a car offers practical freedom for exploring the wider Algarve break circuit—dozens of more consistent and powerful waves lie within 45 minutes' drive, making Salema useful as a home base rather than a destination on its own.
