More about Praia da Consolação

Consolação is primarily a right-hand point break that peels off quickly and hollows out on the inside, particularly suited to intermediate and advanced surfers seeking longer rides. The wave performs best on lower tides when approaching larger swells, offering walls that can be rippable during pumping conditions, though it tends to hold a fat shape even when other nearby breaks are more defined. Southwest swell and northeast offshore wind create the most favorable conditions; the spot stays cleaner than most west-coast Portuguese locations due to shelter from northern wind.

Entry and exit require careful navigation through rocks and sea urchins scattered around the break, making booties essential. The break remains relatively uncrowded even during good swell periods, and lifeguards are not present at the location.

Consolação lies on Peniche's southern headland adjacent to the more famous Supertubos break. The Peniche area saw surfing activity begin in the 1960s, expanding through the 1970s and 1980s as word spread and small businesses emerged to support visiting surfers, though specific historical information about Consolação's adoption as a destination is sparse in publicly available sources. The major annual competition in the region occurs at Supertubos, not Consolação.
