More about Praia da Bordeira

Praia da Bordeira is a sandbar break that produces both long left-handers peeling off the cliffs at low tide and more powerful hollow rights higher up the beach. The break extends up to 100 meters across a sand bottom and can handle anything from small waist-high waves to overhead surf. It handles a wide range of swell sizes effectively, working best with northwest swells and offshore southeast winds, with October typically bringing the cleanest, most consistent conditions through the winter months. The spot is suitable for all skill levels depending on where and when you paddle out: the mellow peaks near the river mouth work for beginners and intermediates, while the cliff-backed left and power waves to the north suit experienced surfers seeking steeper faces and barrels.

The Carrapateira area transformed from a remote clifftop settlement with only a handful of fishermen and visitors into a recognized surf destination over the past few decades. The beach itself has long been known to locals, but its consistent year-round swell and multiple break zones made it increasingly popular as word spread among European surfers. Today it draws both casual learners and dedicated wave-chasers, though it remains less crowded than more famous Portuguese breaks.

The easiest approach is from Carrapateira village, a roughly 2-kilometer drive on decent road to a free parking area overlooking the cliffs. The river crossing onto the beach varies dramatically with tide—at low water it's ankle-to-knee deep and manageable, but high tide can make it waist-deep or impassable, so tide planning is essential for your session. A boardwalk offers a drier alternative if the ford is too high, though it adds distance to your walk.
