More about Popotla
Popotla is a reef break with both left and right options, though the primary wave is a fast-breaking left that produces hollow sections capable of barreling when swell is substantial. The exposed reef is consistent year-round but peaks during autumn and winter, with January typically offering the most reliable conditions. Best conditions arrive with west-facing swell, offshore southeast wind, and at low-to-mid tides. The break is suited for experienced surfers and rarely draws crowds even on good days. Submerged rocks are the primary hazard.
The broader Ensenada area was pioneered by Windansea surfers in the 1960s, with early documented exploration beginning in 1963, though I found no specific records of notable sessions, competitions, or surfers associated with Popotla itself.
Access to Popotla is managed through the adjacent Popotla Mobile Home & RV Park, located at kilometer 34 on the Libre highway south of Rosarito, past Fox Studios. The spot is essentially private unless staying at the park, which sits directly on the break and offers full hookups and accommodations year-round. Getting there without a reservation is difficult but not impossible.
