More about Ponto

Ponto is a fast, hollow beach break with barreling sections formed by sandbars at the Batiquitos Lagoon outlet, where two jetties force distinct peaks to develop. Lefts peel off the north jetty and rights off the south jetty depending on swell angle and tide, creating an A-frame shape. The wave requires intermediate to advanced skill; the steep takeoff and rapid sections challenge beginners. Best conditions come from west-southwest to northwest swell at 3 to 10 feet, with northeast offshore winds holding shape. Counterintuitively, mid-tide often produces cleaner lines than low tide, when strong rip currents (especially on the south side) and continuous lagoon outflow make for hazardous paddling. The break fires strongest October through April but works year-round on groundswell. Crowds thicken quickly when conditions align.

Ponto emerged in the mid-20th century as a byproduct of infrastructure rather than natural geology. The Army Corps of Engineers built two jetties to permanently open the Batiquitos Lagoon, and the jetties proved extraordinarily effective at trapping and sculpting sand into what locals describe as a sandbar factory. The spot's name likely derives from an anglicized mispronunciation of the Spanish "punto," meaning point. While Ponto itself lacks documented major competitions or legendary sessions, it sits within Carlsbad's broader surf heritage dating to the 1960s, when the area became a nucleus for influential board shapers and innovators.

Ponto is accessed at South Carlsbad State Beach along Carlsbad Boulevard at Avenida Encinas, between the Carlsbad campground and Leucadia. Paid parking ($15 per day) is available at the south lot, with free street parking along the boulevard and a small free lot at Avenida Encinas. A paved path descends to sand. Public restrooms and showers are available. From I-5, take the Poinsettia Lane exit westbound; beach access is roughly 1.1 miles from the highway.
