La Vaca, the wave associated with this location, is a big wave reef break that forms roughly two and a half kilometers offshore at the cliffs of La Cantera-Cueto. It responds to N-NW swells and produces waves that grow to seven or nine meters during significant swell events. The break requires paddling out rather than towing in, and surfers must contend with strong currents and unstable underwater conditions as primary hazards.
The break was discovered relatively recently in 2006 by Óscar Gómez and Luis García, Cantabrian surfers who found the wave during favorable offshore conditions. Since then it has become the host for La Vaca Gigante, an international big wave competition established as part of the Big Wave Alliance circuit. The competition operates on an annual waiting period from October through May, activating only when swells and safety conditions align. It has grown into one of Europe's most significant extreme surf events and the only major big wave championship currently running in Spain.
Playa de El Bocal itself is a small sandy cove roughly 150 meters long situated about three kilometers north of Santander's center. The beach sits isolated among natural cliffs and receives no development or services, making access difficult via narrow coastal roads. Reaching the actual break at La Vaca requires boat access, as paddling out from the beach is impractical given the offshore distance and exposed position at the cliff base.
