More about Plage de Gros Sable

Plage de Gros Sable features two distinct reef breaks aligned with south and southeast swell. The left-hand wave has two sections: a powerful, steep take-off zone near a rock formation where maneuvers are possible, followed by a softer midsection that reforms and allows longer rides, particularly suited to longboards and small waves. The right-hand break is shorter with a hollow opening section that rapidly slows before closing out; it runs tight against cliffs and carries real hazard. The beach itself is a 130-meter expanse of pebbles where both waves meet at the shore. Ideal swell ranges from 50 centimeters to 1.5 meters from the east with minimal wind; shortboards work best once swell exceeds 70–80 centimeters. Shallow reef, black sea urchins, and rolling stones at the waterline compound the hazards, and sargassum seaweed accumulates heavily from May through October.

The spot draws both beginner and intermediate surfers with a resident school providing instruction. Competitions have been held here, though I found no detailed historical record of how long the spot has been surfed or notable historical sessions and surfers.

Access is straightforward with free parking, though spaces fill during busy periods—arriving early or visiting on weekdays is advisable. The site lies about 45 minutes from the airport in the south-central part of Grande-Terre. Limited shade and the seasonal sargassum problem make the November–April window the preferable surf window despite less consistent swell.
