More about Pismo Beach Pier

The Pismo Beach Pier sits on a wide sandy beach facing west-northwest, attracting mixed-ability surfers depending on which side of the pier they choose. The north side holds a consistent left that can barrel under good conditions and works for more experienced surfers, while the south side offers mellower, more forgiving waves on sandbars that appeal to beginners and intermediates. Typical waves run 2-3 feet with sets reaching 3-4 feet, peaking during winter months and particularly in January. The break performs best with long-period west-northwest swell combined with offshore northeast winds and is markedly better at high tide. Positioned in the lee of Point San Luis, Pismo receives notably less swell than the more exposed breaks to the south around Oceano.

The spot has hosted competitive surfing since at least the mid-20th century and has become a regular venue for professional and adaptive competitions. The SLO CAL Open, a World Surf League Qualifying Series event now worth 3,000 points, draws over 200 competitors annually and has taken place for at least seven years. Pismo has also hosted the ISA World Para Surfing Championship multiple times in recent years, attracting adaptive surfers from around the world. Additionally, the USA Surfing Prime Series, the top junior championship in the country for surfers under 18, runs an invitational stop here. The pier itself dates to 1881 and stands at 1,250 feet long, illuminated at night.

Access is straightforward with public parking directly adjacent to the pier at Pomeroy Avenue and an additional free lot off Addie Street serving the southern stretch. The beach is wide and sandy, making it easy to position yourself away from the crowds concentrated at the pier. Parking and beach entry are free, with no barrier to accessing the water.
