More about Pipes
Pipes is a versatile reef break known for both left and right-hand waves, situated at the north end of the San Elijo State Beach campground. It performs best in winter months, particularly January, when west-southwest swells align with northeast winds and a rising mid-tide. The break needs a minimum of two feet to work and suits a wide range of boards from shortboards to longboards, though it's become particularly popular as a consistent longboarding destination. Submerged rocks and shallow reef sections at low tide present hazards alongside inevitable crowds during good conditions.
The break takes its name from a row of concrete drainage pipes that once sat on the beach and served as a navigational landmark for surfers; these have since been buried by sand. Pipes is one of the most reliable and popular spots in North County San Diego, known for consistent rideable conditions year-round.
Access is straightforward: take the Birmingham Drive exit off Interstate 5, head west and turn south on San Elijo Avenue. Free parking is available along Pacific Coast Highway at the north end of the San Elijo campground, or paid lots are available at the official state beach facilities.
