More about Pipeline

Cipolla Pipeline is an exposed beach break in the Chia area with both left and right waves. Conditions are inconsistent year-round, particularly flat during summer months. The break develops at all tides and handles southwesterly swells best, though it responds more readily to local windswell than distant groundswells. Northwest wind provides ideal offshore conditions. The break becomes noticeably more powerful and demanding over approximately 2.5 meters, shifting from intermediate to expert-only terrain; smaller waves are more accessible to developing surfers.

The seafloor consists of sand with sections of granite reef, creating the documented hazards of dangerous rips, exposed rocks, and shallow water zones that intensify during larger swells. Crowds are rare at this break.

Sardinia's surfing culture developed only from the 1980s onward, making Mediterranean wave riding a relatively recent tradition compared to global surf hotspots. The Chia zone itself offers several distinct breaks nearby, and the island has positioned itself as the Mediterranean's primary cold-weather destination with consistent conditions available roughly 300 days per year. Access requires a drive from Cagliari of approximately one hour via the SS 195; parking is available near Cala Cipolla for €5-8 with a short walk of around 100 meters to reach the beach. No facilities exist on-site, and the approach road is dirt track that may challenge compact vehicles.
