More about Pigeon Point

Pigeon Point is a steep reef and rocky break that requires significant experience, with right and left waves capable of reaching 16 feet or higher during winter swells. The break has a demanding, choppy character and demands precise positioning; a 5–6 foot minimum is needed to find shape. Best conditions align with southwest swell and northeast offshore wind at low to mid tide, though Southern swells that would truly light it up are relatively rare in this region. The break maintains an empty lineup year-round but comes alive during the June-through-November swell season.

The rocky point itself, a lightning rod for maritime history, sits adjacent to a 115-foot lighthouse built in 1872. While no specific documented surf history exists beyond local knowledge, the break's inaccessibility and hazardous character have kept it out of mainstream attention and competition circuits.

Access is via parking along Highway 1 south of Pescadero, followed by a walk across farmland to reach the break. The remoteness is genuine—no services exist nearby except for a youth hostel at the lighthouse. This area is confirmed great white shark habitat; the primary risk alongside rocks is predation, not just surf hazard. Whaler's Cove south of the point sometimes closes due to seal haul-outs.
