More about Pelican State Beach
Pelican State Beach is a long, wide sandy beach break offering left and right-hand waves. It's an accessible spot for surfers of all skill levels, though the small to moderate waves typical of the area mean it works best during winter swells. Sleeper waves are a significant hazard—as with all ocean access in this area, never turn your back on the water. Sharks are present in these northern California waters.
The beach itself is extremely remote and rarely crowded. Located 21 miles north of Crescent City near Smith River, just south of the Oregon border, it has earned the nickname "the loneliest beach in California" due to its easy-to-miss access road and isolation. I found no documented surf history, competitions, or notable sessions associated with this break—it appears to lack a developed or recognized surf community presence.
Access requires driving to a remote parking area with no facilities. The beach offers wide, sandy walking and reasonable access to the water, though ocean temperatures rarely exceed 65°F and the location can be quite windy.
