More about PB Point

PB Point is a right-hand reef break that produces longer rides than typical San Diego waves, sometimes connecting all the way to Tourmaline on substantial swells. The break needs above-average swell and works best during low to mid tide, primarily in winter months when consistent waves appear roughly half the time in January. West to northwest swells combined with northeast offshore winds create the cleanest conditions, though the rocky bottom becomes rough and choppy when swell sizes grow larger.

The spot holds significant place in San Diego's early surf history, serving as the primary surfing destination in the 1930s—even more established than Windansea at that time. During World War II, the military repurposed the area as Gunnery Point, an anti-aircraft training range that remained off-limits until the mid-1950s. This history is reflected in the break's alternate names, including False Point, Sun Gold Point, and Gunners Point.

The break sits on the border between Pacific Beach and La Jolla, distinguished by its rocky reef foundation that both enables extended rides and adds risk. The spot consistently draws crowds and possesses the hazards typical of rocky breaks: rocky bottom impact risk, strong currents, and localism.
