More about Patoles
Patoles is a long, walling left point break formed by a coastal configuration that wraps southwest and south swell into consistent rides of 150 to 500 meters on favorable days. Waves begin forming at waist-to-chest height and peak between head and double overhead, with proper barrels appearing along the upper section of the point on larger swells. Best conditions align southwest swell with east-northeast wind; south wind deteriorates face quality. The sand and rock bottom includes shallow rocks scattered along the point, particularly hazardous near its head. The break fires most reliably from April through October, with August typically producing the largest, most consistent waves.
Patoles has functioned as an organized surf destination since the early 2000s, with multiple camps established to access the break. The spot has earned a reputation among intermediate to advanced surfers for producing both long, high-quality walls and legitimate barrel sections, particularly at peak size. Localism exists but tends to remain light during weekdays, with respectful lineups generally welcoming visitors.
Access requires a ninety-minute drive south from Mazatlan. Road conditions deteriorate during the rainy season, especially around August, making access unreliable after heavy rainfall. Seasonal strong rips develop during this period and can push swimmers toward rocky terrain inland from the break. Locals fish the area regularly and set nets that demand awareness when paddling out.
