More about Palmitas
Palmitas is a high-energy sandbank beach break that produces steep, fast-breaking waves in both directions. The sandbanks shift unpredictably, making wave quality inconsistent—on good days with proper sandbars established, riders get tight, snappy pockets and can thread fast sections, but the shape and ridability vary session to session. High tide intensifies the break, creating steeper and more demanding walls that test competent shortboarders.
Winter months (roughly November through March) offer the most reliable potential, when consistent north swells reach the coast; summer swells tend to be inconsistent and weaker. The spot works best with short-period north swell combined with northerly winds and works optimally during medium to high tide phases, though mid-tide can also produce good shape. Water is typically clean and crowds are light on both weekdays and weekends.
Access is straightforward from Punta de Mita: a five-minute walk from La Lancha neighborhood or about fifteen minutes from central Punta de Mita. Rocky areas present hazard management concerns in the water.
