More about Pakala
Pakala is a left-hand point break on Kauai's southwest shore that wraps around a rocky point on the south side of the bay, producing fast, powerful waves that peel across shallow coral reef. The break works best during summer months with south to southwest swell and northeast winds; conditions are surfable across all tidal stages, but lower tides make the wave steeper and more hollow while increasing the risk from the coral bottom. Wave faces typically range from head-high to double overhead on good days, and long individual rides of 50 to 150 meters are possible under ideal conditions. The shallow reef bottom creates consistent barrels but demands experienced paddling ability and knowledge of the break's dynamics. Primary hazards include coral abrasions from the shallow bottom, sea urchins, rocks scattered along the point, sharks, and strong rip currents that funnel through the bay.
Pakala's local name, "Infinities," reflects the exceptionally long rides the point produces, and the break is recognized as one of the longest continuous wave runs on Kauai. The spot has developed a strong local surfing culture, with experienced Hawaiian and Kauai-based surfers holding priority in the lineup. Respect for local tradition and established surfing etiquette is important for visitors, as Pakala remains primarily a locals' destination where the water quality can be compromised by runoff from nearby river systems.
Access requires parking along the shoulder of Kaumualii Highway (HI-50) near mile marker 21, just east of Waimea, where you can spot other surfers' vehicles parked roadside. A short walk of approximately five minutes through coastal vegetation leads down to the beach. The area has no lifeguards or restroom facilities. The nearest town with services is Waimea.
