More about Pacific City

Pacific City is a composite break with exposed beach sections and reef components that work year-round, driven primarily by westerly swells. The sandy beach produces shapely left and right peaks in smaller conditions, with an offshore right-hand reef break becoming more prominent as swell increases. Winter brings the most powerful waves, often 8 to 15 feet, while summer typically sees 4 to 8 foot sets. The break responds well to east winds and works across all tidal stages, though conditions frequently turn choppy and wind-affected. The northern end near Cape Kiwanda slopes gently and suits developing surfers, while the southern section and the nearby Gas Chambers reef to the north present considerably more demanding conditions and stronger currents; Gas Chambers specifically is a specialized left for advanced surfers only. Rips and occasional sharks present typical coastal Oregon hazards.

The Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic has defined Pacific City's surfing culture since 1998, when local shop owners Bob and Michelle Ledbetter initiated the event to build community among Pacific Northwest surfers. The competition now runs annually for over a quarter-century under Moment Surf Company's stewardship, drawing more than 240 competitors and becoming the region's premier longboard contest. Prize proceeds have funded local infrastructure improvements, including the ongoing maintenance of Pacific City's skatepark.

Pacific City sits on Oregon's north coast in Tillamook County, accessed via the main beach at Cape Kiwanda. The location offers straightforward beach parking and facilities for a developed coastal town, making it accessible for both tourists and committed local surfers year-round.
