More about Ours
Ours is a right-hand reef slab in Kurnell that breaks extremely close to the cliff base, with just a few metres between the reef and the jagged rocks below. The wave is fast and ledgy, building into thick and powerful walls that detonate with particular violence when hit by east or southeast swell, often accompanied by violent backwash bouncing off the cliffs. Best conditions typically occur on rising or falling tides at mid to high water, with westerly or southwesterly winds and southeast to east swell. The reef shelf is extremely shallow and narrow, leaving minimal margin for error, and the break sits within Kamay Botany Bay National Park.
The break was first surfed in the 1960s as Pikers Hole by local bodyboarders and a handful of board riders, though the heavy slab remained largely abandoned for decades as other surfers questioned whether it could be safely ridden. In the 1990s, a group of young surfers from Maroubra, known as the Bra Boys, rediscovered the break and claimed it as their own, renaming it Ours. The group's aggressive protection of the break became notorious throughout the 2000s, making it one of Australia's most controversial surf spots. By the 2010s, Red Bull began hosting the Cape Fear competition at the break, attracting specialist big-wave and slab surfers to compete in uniquely formatted events held when conditions align.
Access requires entry to Kamay Botany Bay National Park, located at the southern tip of Botany Bay near Kurnell. The break is situated roughly twenty metres out from a steep cliff face. Water entry and exit are inherently difficult due to the surrounding rock formations and the wave's proximity to the cliff, making this break accessible only to advanced big-wave specialists with extensive experience on heavy slabs and shallow reefs.
