More about Ouakam

Ouakam is an A-frame reef break on the volcanic Cap-Vert peninsula offering both right and left options over sharp, shallow reef. It breaks on northwest swell ranging from 3 to 6 feet with a favorable period of 14 seconds, generating fast barrels when conditions align. The spot requires northeast offshore winds and mid to high tide, with the break producing rideable waves roughly 20 to 30 times annually due to inconsistent swell patterns. The sharp reef and sea urchins make this strictly an advanced break.

Senegal's modern surf culture took root after appearing in The Endless Summer, but Ouakam became prominent through local pioneers like Patina Ndiaye and Oumar Seye, who became Senegal's first professional surfer after being scouted at age 16. More recently, Cherif Fall became the first Senegalese surfer to achieve international recognition, helping establish the Anda Surf Club alongside Ibra Sambe to grow the local scene. National competitions rotate between Dakar's reef breaks (including Ouakam and nearby Ngor) and the beach breaks of Saly, with Senegal hosting the World Surfing Games in 2023, the first African nation to do so.

Ouakam lies on the northwest coast of Dakar near the iconic Deux Mamelles volcanic cones and the Mosque of Divinity. The break sits between Almadies and Corniche Ouest, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Dakar by car. Beach parking is available at the entrance, and the spot is accessible via taxi or shared sept-places vehicles from throughout the city.
