More about Open Doors

Open Doors is a left-hand beach break over sand on the east side of Isla Natividad, known for producing some of the most challenging barrel waves found on any beach break. The waves are extremely fast and hollow, capable of reaching double overhead during quality swells, with the break performing best during southerly swell directions combined with northwest wind. All tide stages work here, though the afternoon barrels tend to be most pronounced. This is strictly an expert-level wave—the combination of speed, power, and hollow shape demands serious surfing ability.

The island emerged as a destination for dedicated surfers by the mid-1980s, when a small community of advanced surfers began making the journey to explore its remote breaks. A 1986 expedition of surfers and marine biologists specifically sought out Isla Natividad for its outstanding waves, reflecting how the island had already gained a reputation among those willing to make the effort to reach it. The spot has remained part of the world's underground expert-only catalog ever since, drawing only the most committed surfers.

Access to Open Doors requires either a small private plane landing on the island's dirt airstrip or a boat journey of roughly thirty minutes from Punta Eugenia on the mainland. The extreme remoteness means there is minimal accommodation available, and the barrier to entry naturally restricts visits to experienced surfers capable of arranging their own transportation. This isolation has helped preserve the spot as a rarely crowded expert-only destination.
