More about Ollie´s Point

Ollie's Point is a right-hand point break that peels across rock and sand at a river mouth, delivering rides that can stretch 300 to 500 meters when conditions align. The wave accelerates quickly down the point and frequently hollows, with the best shape appearing on low tide during solid southwesterly swells paired with offshore winds from the northeast. It suits intermediate and advanced surfers, demanding respect for shallow rocks at the takeoff and the estuary crocodiles that inhabit the nearby shoreline.

The break was discovered in the 1970s and first surfed during the 1980s when American personnel, some of them surfers, found waves while stationed in the region during the Contra conflict. Surfer Magazine's TV crew named it in 1987 as a double gesture—masking the location while nodding to Oliver North and the Iran-Contra scandal unfolding around a nearby CIA airstrip. Ollie's Point entered the national park system in 1989 and reached global prominence after Endless Summer II released footage of its perfect right-hand walls in 1994, transforming it from a kept secret into one of the world's most sought-after point breaks.

The break sits inside protected land with no road access and remains reachable only by boat, typically chartered from towns like Playa del Coco or Playa Ocotal along the Guanacaste coast. Moderate boat traffic brings afternoon crowds despite the single takeoff zone, and isolation means medical evacuation would be slow. The wave periods best in July and peaks around full-moon timing when southerly swell pulses through.
