More about Grand-Village

Grand-Village sits on a broad 2-kilometer sandy beach on Île d'Oléron's Atlantic-facing west coast, delivering consistent peaky beach break waves in both directions. The spot requires a minimum westerly swell around 3 feet to activate and performs best with easterly offshore winds during mid-tide conditions. The break handles larger swell well into the double-digit foot range and remains workable on roughly 95 percent of tide cycles. Summer months bring flatter conditions, while autumn through spring—particularly October—offers the most reliable groundswell, with Atlantic storms providing the most consistent fuel.

Grand-Village has served as a venue for regional competitive surfing, most notably hosting France's national longboard and stand-up paddle championships. The beach lies within an organized surf community on Île d'Oléron, with established schools and clubs operating nearby, indicating a background of local development rather than a recently discovered novelty.

Access involves limited roadside parking along roughly a kilometer of beach road, with overflow motorhome facilities (40 spaces) located about 1 kilometer inland at Parking de l'Épinette. The beach is patrolled during summer months. Be aware of baïnes—powerful rip currents—particularly in adjacent beach sectors, which require respect and caution. Nearest airports are Rochefort (22 km south) and Royan (33 km).
