More about Chassiron

Chassiron is a rocky reef break producing both left and right-hand waves with steep walls suitable for maneuvers. The break works best at low tide when the reef is more exposed; at high tide, only swell lines are visible and the approach becomes treacherous. Offshore winds from the southeast combined with southwest swell produce the cleanest conditions, which are most frequent during winter months, particularly October, when reliable surfable waves appear roughly a third of the time. Summer is predominantly flat.

This is a hazardous spot requiring experience with rocky reefs. Sea urchins inhabit the area, making bare feet risky, and surfers must walk on the rocky bottom to assess conditions. Strong currents run through the break, and the isolated exposure means surfers should never go alone.

Access requires traveling to Saint-Denis-d'Oléron on Île d'Oléron. The spot offers reliable winter swell and clean conditions due to its exposed position, but summer visitors should expect minimal activity.
