Old Man's produces soft, rolling, mushy waves that peel along the beach in both directions, with long, gentle rides ideal for learning and practicing stylish turns or nose riding on longboards. The sandy bottom helps create these forgiving conditions. It works year-round but peaks from November through February when Northwest winter swells arrive; Northeast offshore winds help clean up the face, and low-to-mid rising tides keep the waves organized—high tide really flattens the potential. Nearby peaks can absorb bigger swell, but Old Man's itself stays mellow even in larger conditions.
Tourmaline Surfing Park has deep roots in surf culture as America's first beach area officially dedicated to surfing, formally dedicated on May 29, 1965 during the ninth annual Pacific Beach Aquafair and Western Regional Surfing Championships. The park has remained a foundational training ground and social hub in Southern California's surf scene for six decades, anchoring North Pacific Beach as a welcoming entry point for generations of new surfers.
The spot sits at the northern end of Pacific Beach with abundant parking at the base of a hill and full beach facilities including restrooms and showers. Access is straightforward but the break draws very heavy crowds, especially on weekends and weekdays—finding open water and space to practice requires patience and early sessions.
