More about Old Man's

Old Man's is a sustained right-hand point break where waves peel for 100+ meters over a sandy-rocky reef, producing mellow walls ideal for longboarding. Swell from the south and southwest combines with north-northwest offshore winds to generate the most consistent conditions; summer typically brings larger swells than winter, with waist-to-chest-high waves the norm. The break holds form across tidal cycles, though low tide exposes more rocks and concentrates sea urchins on the reef.

Traveling surfers nicknamed the break in the 1970s, drawn by its forgiving character and extended runs rather than any particular trick or maneuver. The spot has since evolved into a regular venue for regional competitions and remains popular among both local surfers and instructors operating from the adjacent Cabo Surf Hotel.

Access requires navigating a staircase and tunnel from the parking area; a small free lot sits off the highway, though parking fills quickly during peak hours. The hotel grounds house a formal surf school and board-rental service. Low tide exposes the reef's full hazard profile—sea urchins and sharp rocks pose the primary danger, and the hotel posts warning signs and emergency medical contact information for urchin injuries.
