More about Okanda

Okanda is a sand-bank point break that produces rides of up to 300 yards along its shape. It handles swell between 3 and 8 feet comfortably, with smaller swells going mushy and larger swells tending to close out. The break works best when southeast to south swell combines with offshore winds from the north-northwest, making it a moderately technical wave requiring solid paddling skills and good positioning.

This remote spot remains one of Sri Lanka's least-surfed quality breaks—many sessions are completely empty. Access is arduous, requiring at least two hours of driving over rough dirt roads from Arugam Bay, and local guides are essential for navigating the area. Strong rips are a consistent hazard, and jellyfish regularly appear in the water, making seasonality important to check before paddling out. The peak season runs May through August.
