More about Ofir
Ofir breaks along a mobile sandbar at the mouth of the Cavado River with multiple peaks distributed along the beach face, producing both left and right waves suitable for beginners and intermediates. Wave quality varies significantly with tide: low water produces steeper, faster-breaking sections while high tide creates softer, slower waves. The spot works year-round but receives most consistent swell during autumn and winter, particularly December through February when Atlantic storms push reliable northwest swell. Spring and summer offer smaller, cleaner conditions with less powerful but more manageable waves. Best conditions align northwest-to-west swell with northeast winds.
Access is straightforward via free parking near the beach with wooden walkways leading to the water. The location sits within the Parque Natural do Litoral Norte just south of Esposende, with full facilities including showers, restaurants, and equipment rentals. At low tide, rocky outcrops emerge from the seabed creating the local phenomenon known as the "horses of Fão." The dynamic sandbar here constantly shifts due to river flow and Atlantic energy, typical of estuary mouths on exposed coasts.
