More about Northern Rights
Northern Rights is a fast-breaking right-hand reef that works across a range of 3 to 12 feet. It produces clean barrels when a solid southwest swell aligns with offshore northeasterly winds, and requires at least mid to high tide with a minimum of 1.5 meters of water to avoid the shallow coral. The break is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers; the shallow, sharp reef and strong currents on larger swells demand experience. It rarely draws crowds.
Sumbawa is still in the early stages of being discovered by the wider international surf community, and Northern Rights is part of a cluster of reef breaks gaining attention in West Sumbawa. The region's professional surfing profile is growing—a nearby competing break was recently selected for the World Qualifying Series. Peak swell season runs from November through April, with the heaviest and most consistent barrels typically arriving during June and July.
Northern Rights sits about five minutes by scooter from Kertasari village in Moro Bay, accessed via Taliwang from the main road. The nearest airports are Mataram (73 km) and Sumbawa Besar (75 km), both requiring ground transportation and a scooter to reach the break.
