More about Nobbys Beach
Nobbys Reef is an exposed reef break featuring both left and right-hand waves that responds best to southeast swell with northwest offshore winds. The reef holds waves ranging from 2 feet in summer conditions to 10 feet on the outer sections during larger swells, with a reputation for hollow, barreling sections under the right conditions. Surfable across all tides, the break is most consistent during winter months, particularly May, though overall conditions are somewhat inconsistent.
Newcastle's broader coastline hosted notable competitive surfing, including world champions like Mark Richards who emerged from the region. While Surfest, established in 1985 as one of the world's richest surfing competitions, now runs at Merewether Beach, it historically rotated between Newcastle area breaks, reflecting the region's deep roots in Australian professional surfing.
Nobbys Beach is located at the corner of Shortland Esplanade and Nobbys Road in Newcastle East, with free parking available nearby on a four-hour limit that typically fills during warm weather. Light rail access reaches Newcastle Beach station, from which Foreshore Park provides a walking route to the beach. The immediate area contains multiple distinct breaks, making it accessible to a range of skill levels alongside swimmers and families.
