More about Habushiura
Habushiura is a sand beach break on the eastern coast of Niijima Island that generates reliable waves throughout the year. South-facing swells produce the best conditions, with west offshore winds creating clean faces. The break handles all tidal stages and produces both left and right waves. Though suitable for beginners through intermediate surfers with rental shops and instructors available, the beach can develop hollow, challenging waves when swell size increases. Local wind-generated swells dominate over distant groundswells, with peak conditions typically occurring in summer months.
The island became a center of Japan's modern surf culture after American servicemen stationed at nearby military bases introduced surfing in the 1960s during the Vietnam War. Surfers left boards in beach huts that locals eventually learned to use, establishing a connection to the island that persisted for decades. Professional surfer Gerry Lopez visited Niijima in 1978, an event witnessed by the local surfing community. Habushiura hosted the Quiksilver Pro Japan in June 2003, a World Championship Tour event held at Secret Point, a nearby reef-and-sand section of the beach south of the main break. Andy Irons won the competition, defeating Joel Parkinson in the final.
Habushiura extends over three kilometers of white sand beach beneath tall cliffs on Niijima, one of the Izu Islands about two hours by ferry from Tokyo. The island's accessible location near the capital made it increasingly popular for visiting surfers seeking consistent waves, with established infrastructure including shops and accommodations for travelers.
