More about Nigg Bay
Nigg Bay is a beach break that hosts fast, hollow left and right-hand waves capable of reaching triple overhead in favorable conditions. It works at all tide levels and produces its best surf during winter and spring when southeast swells combine with westerly winds. The bottom consists of sand and boulders rather than rock, and two reef breaks flank either end of the bay. The area requires at least intermediate surfing ability given the power and speed of the waves, and the water temperature drops to approximately 7°C, necessitating a thick winter wetsuit and booties.
The break was historically known for producing aggressive right walls during winter swells, but significant industrial changes have altered its character. In 2017, construction began on a £420 million harbor expansion project that opened in 2023 as Aberdeen South Harbour, an offshore oil, gas, and wind industry facility. This development has materially changed the wave formation and energy at the break, diminishing the intensity of the conditions that previously made it notable.
The bay lies east of Aberdeen between Girdle Ness and Greg Ness, with straightforward access via car parks at Abbotswells Crescent to the east and Nigg Way to the west. The break rarely experiences crowding and offers reasonably consistent conditions, though water quality in the area is poor and the bay typically receives windswells rather than clean ground swell.
