More about Nazaré

Nazaré is a tow-in big wave break created by an immense underwater canyon that amplifies Atlantic swells to 2–3 times normal size, regularly producing waves exceeding 20 meters and occasionally breaking above 30 meters in height. The break itself occurs at Praia do Norte, accessed by jet ski only for the giant swells; the canyon geometry creates waves with unpredictable shape and shifting dynamics that demand both precise towing and quick decision-making. Hazards include the sheer power and height of the waves, strong currents, rapidly shifting swell angles, and the ever-present risk of being separated from jet ski support in cold Atlantic water.

Surfing Nazaré began recreationally in the late 1960s on small waves, but the spot became a big wave destination in the mid-2000s after Hawaiian Garrett McNamara was towed into winter swells by local guides. The Big Wave Challenge has run as an invitation-only event since 2011, drawing elite tow-in surfers from across the world. Sebastian Steudtner holds the Guinness World Record with a wave measuring 26.21 meters, set in October 2020; other notable big wave riders including Rodrigo Koxa and Nic von Rupp have pushed the limits further in subsequent seasons.

Nazaré lies along the coast north of Lisbon in the Leiria District, about 120 kilometers north of the capital and roughly 45 minutes north of Peniche. The town is easily reached by car via the A8 motorway. Access to the viewing area is free from Fort São Miguel Arcanjo, which overlooks Praia do Norte. The season runs October through March, with November to February offering the most consistently large swells; early morning is ideal when Atlantic storms have generated 3-meter-plus swells with 15–20 second periods and offshore winds push from the east or northeast.
