More about Nang Thong Beach
Nang Thong is a sandy beach break where southwest swell produces both left and right-handers in the 1 to 3-meter range. The left side near the lighthouse features small, fun right-handers with large boulders in the water, making low to mid tide the best windows for surfing there. Easterly offshore winds are ideal for keeping the faces clean. Rip currents are a genuine hazard on this coast and require careful attention when paddling.
The Andaman coast saw its first regular surfers in the late 1990s, with Khao Lak becoming one of the early focal points for a small Thai surfing community exploring these waters. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated the region, but the area recovered and rebuilt. The main Khao Lak season runs from around April through October, peaking around November, when consistent groundswell and windswell combine.
Nang Thong sits within the Khao Lak area and benefits from proximity to town services and accommodation. The beach remains uncrowded compared to busier Thai breaks, offering practical access for travelers. Local surf shops and instruction schools now operate from the area, making the spot more accessible to visitors.
