More about Mussel Shoals (aka Little Rincon)

Little Rincon is a right-hand point break that wraps around rock and boulder formations, peeling off fast and hollow sections that can stretch 150 meters or longer on quality days. The bottom is rocky rather than purely sandy, creating the sharp, defined walls this break is known for. It handles swell best during the winter months when west to west-northwest swell combines with offshore winds from the northeast. Low to mid tide brings the best shape, though higher tides can still work. The break is demanding enough that it draws intermediate and advanced surfers; beginners find the combination of shallow rocks, turbulent takeoff zones, and tricky exit points prohibitive.

This area has been surfed as an alternative to the more famous Rincon Point break just north of it since at least the mid-twentieth century, though detailed historical records of competitions or notable sessions specific to Mussel Shoals are sparse in public sources. It remains primarily known as a local spot offering similar but shorter swell windows compared to the world-class point break nearby.

Access is tight. Limited street parking exists along Old Pacific Coast Highway near the Cliff House Inn area, with roughly a dozen public spots available and no facilities. You can also access from the north end of Breakers Way. The spot sits just south of the Richfield oil pier that extends toward Rincon Island, so the landmark is unmistakable, but the combination of residential development and practical parking constraints means it never draws the crowds of other regional breaks.
