More about Mullet bay
Mullet Bay is a beach break on the south coast near Maho with distinct left and right channels. The left side (south) is moderately accessible for most surfers, while the right side faces stronger currents and more chaotic water movement that attracts primarily bodyboarders. A large rock formation sits just north of the beach and breaks the wave energy across the bay. The break works almost exclusively during the winter swell season from November through April, when northwesterly swells wrap into the bay with the best conditions occurring alongside moderate northeast winds. Outside the winter window, the bay rarely produces rideable waves.
Rip currents are a consistent feature of this break and represent the primary hazard, particularly along the shoreline and in the deeper channels between the left and right zones. The rocks and shallow areas near the takeoff require local knowledge to navigate safely, and the bay's exposure to the regional current patterns means exit strategy matters more here than at most Caribbean beach breaks.
Parking is free but limited; arriving before mid-morning is advisable on weekends. The beach sits roughly five minutes by car from Maho in the direction of the golf course, and regular minibuses connect it to Philipsburg, making access straightforward for visitors without rental cars.
