More about Moonstone Beach
Moonstone Beach is a sandy beach break with rocky sections that produces consistent waves year-round, breaking both directions off shifting sandbars. Winter swell from the northwest with easterly offshore winds creates the best conditions, particularly during January; the spot works best on a medium tide with 2–4-foot swells. Waves are notably mellow and forgiving, making it accessible for beginners despite having rip currents, sharks, sea urchins, and cold water.
The north coast began surfing in 1959 when transplants from Southern California rode the first waves here. Moonstone has since become one of the two most established and well-known surf breaks in Humboldt County, though this prominence has brought persistent overcrowding from parties, competitions, and group ceremonies that strain the beach's capacity.
Access is via the first Westhaven exit (726A) northbound on Highway 101; head left under the highway on Westhaven Drive, then left onto Scenic Drive, and right to the end of Moonstone Beach Road. A small county park offers limited free parking and a portable restroom; additional parking is available via a public easement on the west side of the gravel lot. The beach is open from 5 AM to 11:45 PM daily. Given tight parking, many visitors walk from nearby Scenic Drive when the lot is full.
