More about Moonlight State Beach

Moonlight State Beach is a broad, multi-peak sand bar with numerous breaks suitable for novices and early intermediates. It receives winter swells from the northwest and west that typically produce waist-to-chest-high waves, with summer conditions considerably smaller and calmer. The break responds best to southwest swells paired with east or northeast winds, and performs most consistently around mid tide when the rising water gives the peaks shape; too much tide softens the faces, while low water causes the sand to crumble and closeouts become common. The shore confronts both rip currents and strong shorebreak that demand caution. Stingrays are a documented hazard, particularly after warm summer spells. Water quality is a significant concern—Cottonwood Creek discharges at the beach, and after heavy rains the mouth becomes unsafe for two days or more owing to urban runoff; even on calm weather days the beach has historically carried elevated bacteria counts.

Moonlight has been surfed since at least the 1950s, when it emerged as the region's primary beginner destination. The addition of volleyball courts and bonfire pits in that era reflected the beach's role as a community gathering place. In modern times the beach has hosted the Switchfoot Bro-Am, a charity surf competition with live music, and the Wavecrest Woodie Meet, an annual vintage car show in September.

Access is straightforward—the beach sits at the terminus of Encinitas Boulevard where the coastal bluff drops to sea level, making it the most convenient entry point among Encinitas' breaks. Ample parking, lifeguard presence, and nearby amenities make it heavily used, particularly on weekends and during summer.
