More about Monument Beach
Monument Beach is a beach break offering lefts and rights across good sand banks, typically best during winter swells from the southeast to east with offshore winds from the west. It remains surfable at any tide stage but can produce stronger rip currents, particularly in unpatrolled sections. The wave suits beginner to intermediate surfers under moderate swell, though it can turn punchy during larger storm systems.
The beach carries standard NSW coastal hazards including sharks and bluebottles. Beyond local knowledge, there is little documented record of major surf competitions or notable individual surfers associated with Monument Beach itself, though it functions as a reliable wave within the broader Bendalong area.
Monument Beach lies within Conjola National Park between Berrara and Bendalong, accessed via Cedar Road off Bendalong Road. The unsealed approach road stretches seven kilometres to the picnic area and remains passable by standard vehicles in dry conditions. Reaching the beach requires either a moderate walk from the picnic area or access from North Bendalong via council carparks at the end of Holly Street or near Conjola National Park's boundary at Birch Road. The beach is situated behind the Walter Hood Monument, erected in 1927 to commemorate eleven crew members and passengers lost when the British clipper ship Walter Hood wrecked on the reef in April 1870 while bound for Sydney from London.
