More about Mondos
Mondos is a sand-bottom beach break that works most swell directions but produces consistently small, mellow waves ideal for progression. The break generates soft, rolling peaks best handled on longer boards. West swell combined with north-to-northwest wind produces the cleanest shape, with autumn delivering the most consistent conditions as swell direction, wind patterns, and water temperature align most favorably.
The beach carries significance in Southern California surfing history—early woman surfer Mary Monks, nicknamed Mondos Mary, pioneered the area in the mid-1950s after learning in Hawaii. The spot has supported generations of local learners and remains recognized as one of the easiest beginner breaks in the region, requiring minimal power or technical ability to catch and ride waves.
Mondos sits three miles north of central Ventura along Pacific Coast Highway between Solimar and Faria Beach Park. Free but limited parking sits adjacent to railroad tracks where trains pass close to the lot; access involves crossing the highway and navigating rocks at the western end of the beach. No lifeguards or commercial facilities are present, and watch for vehicle traffic when entering.
