More about Mindelo

Mindelo is a sandy beach break with prominent rock formations and substantial boulders scattered along the shore. The waves break both left and right and work consistently year-round, best during winter months when conditions align. On optimal low-tide days, the organized, quality of the surf draws comparisons to more famous waves. The break accepts both windswells and ground swells, with ideal conditions occurring when WNW swell combines with ENE offshore wind. Water is cool enough to require a spring wetsuit and hood. The spot can function across a wide range of conditions, with waves ranging from 3 feet on smaller days to 8 feet or larger, and performing best at high and mid tide.

Mindelo entered the surfing scene during the 1980s and has evolved into a notable regional spot with an established bodyboarding community. The beach has attracted a dedicated local crew protective of the break, and it remains known as a dependable option for surfers seeking alternatives to more crowded northern Portuguese spots.

The beach sits in a small cove within Vila do Conde municipality, roughly 5 kilometers southeast of the town center and accessible via the EN13 in about 10 minutes. Free surface parking is available near the beach with approximately 80-100 spaces, though peak periods can make parking difficult. An alternative is the free parking at Mindelo metro station, with a 30-minute walk to the beach.
