More about Maspalomas

Maspalomas is a mixed beach and reef break on Gran Canaria's southern coast, typically producing small waves that rarely exceed two meters and work through all tidal stages. The break offers both left and right-hand opportunities, responding best to southern ocean swells paired with offshore northerly winds, with the most consistent conditions arriving during the summer months, particularly June. The spot works for surfers at all ability levels, though the presence of rocks and frequent crowding require attentiveness.

The spot has hosted competitive surfing since the mid-1970s, when pioneering organizers staged Gran Canaria's first surfing championships and established the island's national surf association. Local talent like Juan Ignacio Barreto helped establish the region's surf culture, and by the early 1980s, the area had attracted out-of-island surfers from the Basque region, one of whom opened the island's first dedicated surf shop. The beach earned official Blue Flag environmental status in 2004 and continues to host both national and international competitions.

Access to the break is straightforward: the GC-1 motorway (exit 46) feeds into the GC-500 road leading directly to the area, with both paid and free parking available near the lighthouse, a short walk from the water. Bus routes 1 and 33 connect Maspalomas from nearby Playa del Inglés and San Agustín for those without vehicles. The beach itself spans more than a kilometer of sand, with designated areas for different water sports.
