More about Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio is a reliable A-frame beach and point break that responds well to south and south-southwest swells in the 4 to 7 foot range, with the clearest conditions arriving when east-northeast winds blow offshore. The break works best around high tide and on the rising tide, though conditions deteriorate significantly at low tide. Wave faces typically range from waist-high to chest-high for beginners, with larger sets available for intermediate surfers on bigger swell days, making it accessible terrain that rarely gets crowded even when conditions are running.

The area has hosted the only surf school established in the region when Manuel Antonio Surf School opened in 2004, marking the beginning of organized instruction and tourism in the break. Beyond that founding, the spot has developed a steady reputation as a beginner-intermediate destination without notable competitions or individual surfer legacy documented in available sources.

Manuel Antonio lies adjacent to the national park near Quepos and is accessible via a short walk from the park entrance, with a second break called Playitas located roughly 1 kilometer up the coast past a distinctive offshore rock formation. The primary hazard is strong rip currents that require respect and awareness, and several breaks in the area including Playitas have crocodile presence that demands caution when entering and exiting the water.
