More about Manresa

Manresa is an exposed beach break on Monterey Bay that consistently picks up significantly more swell than other Santa Cruz breaks, often producing rideable waves when nearby spots are flat. The mile-long sandy beach breaks both left and right across shifting banks, working best on west swells with northeast offshore winds, particularly around mid tide. Winter months, especially January, deliver the most consistent waves; larger swells can produce overhead to triple-overhead conditions, suitable only for advanced surfers, while smaller summer swells are more forgiving for intermediates with short boards. The break's exposure and isolation mean fewer crowds than central Santa Cruz.

The combination of deep offshore dropoffs, strong and unpredictable rip currents, and consistently cold Monterey Bay water makes this an unsuitable spot for inexperienced swimmers or surfers without ocean awareness. Conditions can shift rapidly, and the power required to navigate larger winter swells demands genuine experience.

Manresa is accessed via a large paved parking area on the bluff overlooking the beach, reached by taking San Andreas Road south from Highway 1 toward Watsonville. A $10 day-use fee applies; a stairway and ramps provide direct beach access from the lot.
