Golden bay
Malta
Golden Bay is a northwest-facing sandbar break producing short, left-hand waves that work best with westerly swell and easterly offshore winds. The break functions across all tidal stages, making it accessible regardless of tide. Conditions arrive mostly during the cooler months from November through March, when Mediterranean swells develop, though autumn and spring can also produce rideable waves. The break is beginner-friendly when conditions are modest, though the Majjistral—a powerful northwest wind that strengthens in summer—can create rowdy, challenging conditions. Rip currents pose a persistent hazard, particularly when strong winds push swell into the bay, requiring swimmers and surfers to stay alert and respect the beach flag warning system. The beach is easily reached by car or public bus, with a paid car park that fills quickly during summer months and on weekends; arriving early is essential. A ramp provides disabled access to the beach, though the main route involves steps rather than gradual slope. Lifeguards are present mid-June through mid-September; outside this window, the break has no supervision and carries higher risk. The bay forms part of Malta's northwest coast, drawing both locals and visiting surfers, particularly around the National Day of Surfing in June.
